Sad news (for me, as a fan of the University of Maryland Terrapins) yesterday as men’s basketball coach Gary Williams announced (surprisingly) that he is retiring.

I’m sad about this because it seems that Coach Williams was seemingly constantly dodging calls for his ouster despite an impressive track record and despite being somewhat handicapped by events that transpired before he got to Maryland.  Recruiting against Duke and University of North Carolina was never easy for him, but as ...

Dr. Guy had recently inquired how my relationship (discussed in prior articles to a minor degree) was going.  I had a vague reference to same in the last article previous to this one (Making an Appearance) where I said something like this:

The summer looks like it could be a busy one for me and my family and significant others but I'm glad for that.

I'm back to update again, though I've probably given everything away compliments of the article title.

I sent some notices out to frie...

Just popping my head up for a bit here.  I've lurked here and there but not really had much to say over the last several weeks (since my last article here).  There's certainly been things going on (the fight over the budget and the relatively paltry amount of cuts that were supposed made within same among those things), but for the most part it all continues to be stuff that just didn't seem to inspire me enough to write all that much.

I have done some writing elsewhere (another one...

I was out shopping over this past weekend and while out and about I stopped into a Verizon Wireless store and thought to check on their inventory, or potential inventory, of iPads.  I've been considering and somewhat planning to buy a Verizon Wireless iPad 2 64GB 3G unit (either Black or White, didn't really care which one) but was also well informed enough to know that the chances of units being in stock and available for immediate purchase were likely pretty low.  Sure enough the sto...

Seeing some headlines that are talking about the connundrum that the Obama administration finds itself in over the situation in Libya.  The same sort of situation that many liberals expected him to get us out of in Iraq and Afghanistan, which leads me to ask the liberals out there where is their righteous indignation and their hate and outrage -- the same outrage, the same indignation and same righteous demands that they were making upon the former Commander-in-Chief who immediately preceed...

RIP Elizabeth Taylor.  A very talented actress whose personal life seemed to be regularly in the news, at least for much of the later part of her life.  Sorry to see the news that she passed away today of heart failure.

Interesting article here: Savers' plans make back recent losses (from Washington Times, originally via Associated Press)

My quick summary: if you were not STUPID (or foolish, or whatever other word you wish to substitute in there) and didn't rush to SELL when the market was taking its nosedive, then you should be finding that your investments are returning to pre-"crash" levels and even better, you should be seeing some gains in your investments.

I've said before that there are very few th...

Is strength the right word here?  I honestly don't know, but perhaps others can respond once they read what I'm saying and can consider what words seem to fit.

What I am asking about is whether we -- the citizens of the USA -- would have the strength to get through what the people of Japan are having to get through now?  We like to think of ourselves as very resilient people, very strong people, people that can adapt and cope with just about anything, but can we really?

I'm not s...

No, not Time Life and their books and such, this is an article about Time and Life, or not having enough time to keep up with things as I might otherwise wish.  Specifically coming here to JoeUser.com and writing articles as I used to do more frequently.  While I had gotten back on the trend a bit in the last several months, the most recent months have seen me having little time to come over and write any articles.

Admittedly, if there was something that really warranted an article,...

News reports (via USA Today and others) that reporter David Broder has passed away from complications of diabetes.

Personally I think I could easily insert the word "respected" or words "well respected" in front of the word reporter in that sentence.  Where Helen Thomas was a bitter, grumpy and hateful old bag, Broder was always, at least to me, respectful and in turn earned the respect he got.

I'm sorry to see and/or hear of his passing but I respect the heck out of his long career. ...

News just hit:

High court rules for military funeral protesters

8-1 decision (with Alito dissenting) basically saying the First Ammendment trumps all.

I'm saddened by this as I think the members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas that have been doing these protests are nothing but publicity whores with a complete and total lack of respect for others. Apparently any portion of the bible that related to "do unto others" has been conveniently ignored by these individuals.

Answer to the question in the article title: because it's a very blustery day (at least it is in my area).  Wind gusts up to 60MPH.  Uh, yeah, it's definitely blustery.

Meanwhile it's been a little while since I last put an article up.  I seem to be noticing some difference in the categories that are offered as it took me a little bit to figure out where I should probably file this article at.  Anyway, since the last article I wrote I've been able to take a trip to Orlando...

As I browse the internets today, I see a headline at MSN.com noting that Wikileaks founder Assange fears that if he is extradited he could wind up being sent to the U.S.A. and eventually executed.  Really?  He believes he'd be executed for what he's done?!

He's not a citizen (to the best of my knowledge, admittedly I've not looked it up to confirm, but I think I'm correct on this) of the U.S.A. so can't really be charged with treason, correct?  He could be charged with espionag...

Some random thoughts.

First, congratulations to the Green Bay Packers.  Not that I cared who won the Super Bowl this year, but... for the sake of history, well, I think it's cool that Green Bay gets to take the trophy named for their legendary coach back home with them for a while.

Second, AOL is picking up the Huffington Post to the tune of, well, a lot of money.  If that rag was worth that much, how much should my prose be worth?!  PRICELESS.

Third, the situatio...

Argh, talk about an idiotic idea.  Check out this article (headline is linked):

Outages could lift Pepco rates

If you read through a little of that you find that somewhere along the lines someone decided that it would be a good idea -- to encourage energy conservation -- if Pepco would be able to charge higher rates when less energy was being used. Huh? Did I write that correctly, you bet I did.  Apparently some politician(s) decided it would be a great idea if Pepco was able to ...
