Have to tip my hat to the hoopsters from VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University).  They sent the clearly over-rated Duke Bluedevils packing yesterday (3-15-2007) in the NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament.

Duke took, that's right I said took, a spot that clearly didn't belong to them and failed to make the best use of the gift they received.  They really didn't deserve to be in the NCAA tournament this season and were it not for their reputation and long track record, they'd have been in...

Do I really need to say it here?

Maryland sweeps Duke in the regular season.  Oh what a nice ring that has.

Perhaps now the pollsters -- especially the lame coaches -- will show some love and respect to the Terps.

Duke at 14 going into the game?  heh.   Maryland at 24 in one poll, unranked in the coaches poll? B.S.

R E S P E C T.  That is what Garyland has earned.  Back in the NCAAs where they belong.  Oh how sweet it is.

As that man says, boogity, boogity, boogity, lets go racin'

Despite the cold, the lack of a regularly working furnace in my house (thank god for space heaters!) and a feeling that winter is still here as soon as I step out my door, I know that the Daytona 500 means spring is coming fast.

Thank god for the Great American Race and that super speedway built so many years ago.  We're about to begin roughly 5 hours of racin and I'm ready to make my tail numb as I sit and watch as much as I...

Another season coming and more fantastic rookie salaries and seemingly outrageous demands by the top level draft picks.

Reggie Bush, possibly the next savior for New Orleans Saints football, is holding out because he wants the kind of contract that overall #1 draft pick Mario Williams got or will get from Houston. Does he deserve that type of payout even though he's never played a down in the NFL?

How about super talented Vernon Davis, the tight end that is supposed to be the next great t...

Sad news this a.m. that long-time ESPN baseball resource (commentator, analyst, writer and more) Peter Gammons was stricken with a brain aneurysm and has undergone surgery to repair the problem.

I may not always like his reporting, but Gammons is a very knowledgable and professional baseball writer/authority and has been a fixture on ESPN for almost as long as I can remember.

I hope this situation is one that is resolved quickly and that Gammons is back to full health soon.

Kicked to the curb from his "dream job", sorry Larry Brown, vagabond and carpet bagger extraordinaire of the NBA...

Fired after a year on the job, a disastrous one, but not entirely his fault. His replacement -- Isiah Thomas -- is probably just as much, if not far more at fault than was Larry Brown. The team was assembled by Thomas, apparently without regard to real needs, and without worry about causing cap problems well into the future.

At least from this point, Thomas will be the one ...

After early reports swirled out of Channel 9, WUSA-TV in the D.C. market last week that Bud Selig and his cronies, I mean buddies, in MLB had apparently picked an owner for the Washington Nationals, the rumors were quickly denied and the report was trashed as the worst kind of ill-informed journalism.

According to news today in both of the big area newspapers, it seems that the earlier report was true, and MLB has choosen the ownership group that was merely rumored last week.

If the report...

So the Washington Nationals are in town this weekend and Sunday happens to be one of the Pepsi (oh, how I hate typing that name, as I really hate the rancid drink) Family Four Pack discount ticket deal days. It's a promotion that entails getting 4 tickets to the game (upper deck, cheapie seats), 4 hot dogs (over priced that they are, having already used the word rancid above, I can't comment on the fact that it seems many of the dogs at RFK seem like left overs from back in the days when the R...

In the opposite vein of my last article, how about using the space below to tell me what your most beloved sports team (or teams) is (or are).

Again, if possible, expound on your selection a bit, and tell me why you favor that (or those) team(s).

With all of the recent news lately surrounding the Duke Blue Devils and their now notorious Lacrosse team, I'm reminded of just how much I like to hate on the Dukies -- one of the archrivals of my beloved Terrapins.

That hatred begs the question that I'm posing here for you all now -- what sports team, or sports teams, are you most hated and why?

I have a couple of teams that I can fill in the blanks about, and will do so in my reply below. Please note that you're welcome to just leave a...

Lest anyone mistake a lack of time to blog for a lack of happiness at the news of the Lady Terps taking the NCAA Womens Basketball Championship crown for the 2005-2006 season, dream on.

Coach Brenda Frese and her team deserve all of the glory and attention that they earned in their great win over the hated Blue Devils from Duke.

Maryland joins a select group of NCAA Division 1 schools that won both Mens and Womens championships in basketball. They also have the luxury of having both of th...

Apparently Barry Bonds isn't afraid of taking the rumored Tom Cruise/ Scientology approach (if you haven't followed that tiff, then you haven't been following the South Park, Chef, Scientology, Tom Cruise is in the Closet controversy and I can't help you much there, but oh well) and is now reportedly going to sue the authors of the book that makes well documented claims that Bonds has used steroids and other performance enhancing drugs in his quests to become MLB's greatest homerun hitter of all...

I'm sure I'll get slapped around for my stance here, especially since it's clear that I'm a Maryland Terrapin fan, so my complaint could easily be seen as one of jealousy and envy, but I hope folks will bear with me, listen to or read my argument and perhaps determine that they agree with me.

During the NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament, as I'm sure also happens during the NCAA Womens Basketball Tournament, as I'm also sure happens during the Football Bowl games, and in similar events, we the v...

Just sitting here watching the football playoffs and killing a little time blog clicking and blog exploding (see links in the "Bring more traffic to your blog" area of my sidebar for more info on those services) and thinking that I really wish there was a pool for this weekends playoff game for the local team.

We've had pools for every week of the regular season, we have pools for the NCAA basketball tourney (coming back again soon), and we have pools for the superbowl. One big pool for that...

As I hold my fingers somewhat crossed that my favorite NFL team will keep up the momentum and wind up in the playoffs, I'm curious how many sports fans out there consider themselves somewhat superstitious?

I'm not necessarily to the point of have to wear the lucky shirt or socks that don't get washed during the winning streak, but perhaps to the point of always wearing something with the team name/logo on game day or the days leading up to a big game.

Anyone else there with me for such fan...
