terpfan1980's Articles In Home & Family
December 3, 2012 by terpfan1980
The Christmas cards that my family is sending out for Christmas 2012 are in the mail.  Whew!  Roughly 120 - 130 cards addressed, stamped, stuffed (with a very short "newsletter" this year) for most of them (wife 2.0 may not have stuffed all of the cards that she sent out, but that is her prerogative) -- in the last few years I've put together and sent out a holiday newsletter that went in all of the cards I sent, going back to 2009, when wife 1.0 was killed in the car wreck in...

I got the honor of reviewing an KRUPS XP601050 Espresso machine for home use, compliments of Amazon.  Unfortunately, I was less than completely impressed with the machine.  Read the linked review for full details on the issues I had with it and why I can't really recommend it for purchase.

My spouse (whom I refer to frequently, at another site or three... as wife 2.0, since she's my second wife) does not frequent this site and would be highly unlikely to stumble upon it if I didn't point her in the right direction.  I think I've sent her here in the past to read some of my previous rants and thoughts, but she just hasn't been that interested, and really, until recently, I wasn't all that talkative here any more so it probably didn't matter.

Her fami...

Two years ago today my first wife was killed in a car crash that wasn't her fault.  Those that know my history here know the story, others could look back at prior articles if they wanted.  The short story is that she was on a country road, not far from our home, having taken my daughter to a birthday party for one of her friends.  The daughter had been dropped off and my first wife was apparently going to visit some of her old school friends and perhaps buy some fruits/veggie...

With apologies to those that may have seen this information elsewhere, and with deep appreciation (even if it goes unstated over the next several busy days and weeks) for the well wishes that have been and may be sent my (and my family's) way, I'm posting this article to note the unexpected passing of my wife.

She died in a car accident on the afternoon of July 19, 2009.  Her car was rear ended and apparently the car and she took enough damage to terminate her life.

I've posted elsewh...

Over the last several years I've seen what can only be called 'rapid aging' by my father-in-law.  Sadly, like this writer, he was a man that never seemed to make or find the time to go see a medical doctor to get himself checked up or have any outstanding issues looked at.  I don't know if he just had a fear of Doctors, or of hospitals and surgery and such, or just never really felt that bad, but he clearly had some medical issues that needed to be dealt with but weren't.

Now, I don't want to be giving away too much personal information here, either for myself or my father-in-law, so I'm gonna skimp on details, but provide just a little basic information to fill in some blanks.

This looks to be a year when I'll be wearing sweaters a lot in my home.  It looks like we're in for a cool winter at the very least, if not a downright cold one.  (So much for your global warming theories there AlGore!)

With energy costs as high as they are, especially natural gas (or LP gas) gas costs as high as they are, I am determined to do what I can to keep more money in my pocket and away from the gas company and electric company, so the programmable thermostat in the house i...

Simple enough question - how old is too old for Trick or Treating?

Thanks in advance for your answers!

I talked to my mother a few evenings ago, it was her birthday and I was calling to tell her that I had gotten the phone issues (see earlier article Thanks for almost nothing Verizon) resolved and that our regular phone number was working again, as well as to wish her a happy birthday on her birthday (as we had already had a family gathering to celebrate the birthday back on the weekend).  I asked her how things were going and she answered that it could be better.

Mom isn't someone that n...

So apparently my neighborhood now has problems with hoodlums and jerks.

I have a big blow-up lawn decoration out for halloween.  In this case Gargoyle with eyes that are lit in red thanks to a small lightbulb inside.  I had it out last year and had no problems at all, but this season apparently someone wants to screw with it a bit and they've come along and intentionally cut the same tie down string twice so far.

We've had issues in my area with pre-teens and teens that had been ...

We got the news today, o-boy, that my wife's uncle Phil passed away a little while ago.  It wasn't unexpected at all as his health has been deteriorating slowly but surely, and in some ways is a relief as he has been living in a facility for some time now.  Living in that facility for different reasons though, and living a very distant relationship from his family since the day approx. 12 years ago when he tried to burn down my in-laws home in a suicide/homicide attempt to end his life...

I haven't yet, but I so want to....  I mean really badly want to...

Really, really badly want to.

Want to what?  And why so badly?

Vigilante justice, that's what.

Why so badly?  Because the idiotic neighbors and/or their guests that have been flying up and down the small residential main street in front of my house doing about 60 MPH on a street designated as 15 MPH so badly deserve to face whatever would happen to them.

I've thought about tossing a home made speed ...

Sometimes you actually can find decent products that work as advertised.

I admit to being very skeptical about how well the Brita filtration system products would work, and probably never would have tried one at all if not for seeing fairly positive comments about them over on another site I frequent.  Kudos to Brita and to the folks that talked up the product though as it does work as advertised, at least for my needs.

Where I live one of the few benefits we have is a "no water bill"...

Not to besmirch the good name of the fast food giant, but really I'm curious how they manage to stay in business?

My wife commented a little while ago about the Mickey-D's in the area we lived in when we first got together. That particular restaurant opened about 28 years ago (if my memory is accurate). Maybe a little less, but not far off I think.

Regardless of how long it's been around, it seems to have fallen victim to the same problem that most McDonald's restaurants seem to: they ar...

To JU regulars, you may be scratching your heads a little, mumbling a bit about not even knowing I had even one child, much less more than one (two total actually). There had been some interesting guesses at my age before, where my handle (username) came from, and similar things, with some guessing far off the mark, and some guessing a bit closer.

I tend to be guarded in discussing my private life, especially family life, and haven't posted many details here about my family. I could write t...
