We may all live in a great big global community, but in my Blog, it's my world.

I had the pleasure of getting out for an evening of entertainment last nite.  Headed out to catch one of my favorite artists (musician) at a small club within driving distance.  In this case the artist was the former songstress for the TV show Ally McBeal, the lovely and talented Ms. Vonda Shepard.

I became a fan of Vonda Shepard after catching her work on Ally McBeal and diving a bit further into her body of work.  While fans of the TV show are used to her performances of pop standards, she has a library of songs of her own -- including the song that became the theme to the TV show -- that holds up well on it's own.

I've seen her live performances a few times now and never quite know what I'll get to see.  Thanks to what she jokingly called her old day job (the TV show), most people that know her music don't know her music and instead know her covers of other songs.  Those fans show up at the performances she gives and expect they'll hear those songs and then are confused somewhat when she starts singing about rainy days or Chinatown or just about anything else.

I love most of her songs, but admit that there are some that sound a bit much like others she has done.  After a while you may think you are hearing the same songs again, but you'd have to be listening to more than a few of her albums to hear that sort of repitiveness, and that is most definitely not what you would catch if you see a live performance as she does a pretty good job of rotating through both pop favorites and her own music so that the show stays 'fresh.'

My only complaint about the night out is that I wish it would have gone a little longer.  At just over 75 minutes (by my count), the end came too quickly.  There were still several songs I'd have enjoyed hearing, but eventually the performance must end, especially on an evening when she's doing 2 shows in the same hall.  That 75 minutes for the show I caught might not have been long, but by the time I caught the second performance, she'd already been singing and playing (piano, guitar and such) for over an hour and 15 minutes and only got a short break between the two performances.

I really enjoy hearing Vonda Shepard too and I absolutely loved her music on Ally McBeal, yes, that's how I became a fan of hers!  I really love listening to her voice and style of singing!  That is great that you got to see her!

That is great that you got to see her!

I've caught her live a few times now.  One time on a road trip for my wife and I, up to Trump's Marina casino ballroom.  Not an overly crowded show, nicely arranged with tables for the people that paid for the show to sit at and enjoy a drink if they liked.

The second time was at the point that her Chinatown album was being released.  She was on a small bookstore tour promoting the new album and happened to come through not far from us.  She set up an electronic keyboard and had a guitarist with her that travelled around with her in the equivalent of a VW bus.  (She has always struck me as being a bit of a flower child... )  She played about 4 or 5 tunes there and talked a bit with the shoppers that had come to see her.  Also autographed CDs and such too.  I got a couple of CDs autographed, one specifically to me, a few others that were basically just signed copies that we could give away.  I remember that one as being in the winter time frame as one of the tunes she played and sang was The Man with the Bag (referring to Jolly old Saint Nick and his magic bag of toys and goodies).

This most recent time was a nice smallish club.  Not too many people there, but still a nice crowd.  Again, second of two shows in the same nite and same club.  If the venue was bigger, I suspect she would have played longer and just done one show that entertained the same total number of people for the nite.

Earlier in her Ally McBeal heyday I missed catching her at another nearby club type theatre/auditorium.  I still wish I had caught that show but that's spilled milk now.

On the plus side, I can add some good news to my original article by saying that she did play several new tunes at this most recent show and in doing so she informed the audience that those tunes were coming from her recently completed album/CD.  Apparently to be released in the August time frame.  I checked around on Amazon and they don't show anything coming from her yet, but hopefully they will.  Supposedly in mid August 2008.  I am looking forward to it and will have the money ready to get a copy for sure.

Oh, one last thought her (for now).  I was a little disappointed that there was no 'meet and greet' at the end of the show she did last nite.  The venue that I caught her at is famous for having such artist availability, but alas not last nite.  There was however an opportunity to buy T-shirts (none large enough to fit me ) and some of her CDs.  I have virtually everything she's ever released but the one bonus goodie that was there was U.S. copies of something I only had an import of before: Vonda Shepard LIVE: A retrospective with bonus DVD.  I have the same thing via German import that I paid more for.  I snagged the U.S. version which was a little pricey but not completely unreasonable ($22.20 total).  The German version includes a special bonus track with her singing in German.  Quite beautiful and touching.  Unfortunately the bonus DVD that comes with the German import is region encoded for R2 and also was encoded in PAL format so it won't play on my home DVD players.  Played ok on my PC so I could watch it, but not on the TV   The bonus DVD with the U.S. version plays perfectly on my home DVD players and is of course encoded in NTSC format for region 1 (U.S./North America).  Made the purchase well worth it for me.

I really wish she'd make the U.S. version of that live disc and bonus DVD available via her official website but so far the Merchandise of that website is a work in progress saying the equivalent of Coming Soon.

Neat!  I'm listening to "Tell Him"  right now!
